The auto-decline wall
Sellers commonly set automatic decline thresholds around 80–90% of the asking price. An offer below the threshold is rejected by a machine before any person sees it — instantly, with no counter. If your offers keep bouncing in seconds, you are not negotiating with a seller; you are pinging a setting.
Why we keep value and deliverability apart
An offer can be correct about value and still undeliverable. If sold comps say a card is worth 40% under the ask, no offer that respects the comps will survive the wall. The honest move then is not to raise your number — it is to wait. Overpriced listings drop or sit; chasing the seller upward converts their anchor into your cost basis. Our own offer guidance reports both figures separately for exactly this reason, and never raises an offer to force a reply.
Shipping is part of the trade
eBay Best Offers are made on the item price; shipping is added afterwards. On small Bowman cards postage is routinely 20–40% of the total, so compare the delivered figure against delivered comps — a $22 offer on a listing with $5 shipping is a $27 trade.
